Construction Worker in Beacon Dies After Being Crushed By Excavator

Infrastructure improvement offers numerous potential benefits to local residents and businesses. Many of these jobs require heavy equipment, such as bulldozers, excavators, backhoes and graders. While these machines can contribute to positive change, it just takes a moment to understand the risk associated with large-scale construction projects.
Recently, Amalio Lombardi of Goshen died after being crushed by an excavator while working on Fishkill Avenue in Beacon. The 61-year-old man was part of a crew digging up the section of the road between Conklin Street and Dallis Place as part of the project to repair the city’s water main system. Lombardi had fallen, and was struck by the excavator while he was still on the ground.
Excavators are pivotal in construction for tasks such as digging, lifting and transporting materials, making them indispensable during water main work and other types of projects. However, their size, weight and operational range mean that when something goes wrong, the results could be fatal, as in this incident.
Though no determination has been made as to exactly what led to this deadly construction accident, the safety precautions in place should be reviewed thoroughly. When heavy equipment is involved, all workers should have extensive training on operating the machine and recognizing site-specific hazards. Routine equipment inspections are critical to identifying and rectifying mechanical issues before they contribute to serious or fatal injuries. Establishing clear communication among crew members, implementing controlled access zones around operating machinery and rules requiring workers to wear high-visibility attire can significantly reduce the risk of injury.
As Beacon officials honored Lombardi’s contributions to the town and announced that a memorial bench will be installed in his honor, his family faces a various challenges. In addition to their grief, they could face sudden financial hardship due to the loss of income Amalio Lombardi provided. Surviving family members of employees who die in a job-related incident are entitled to a death benefit under New York workers’ compensation law. The personal representative of Lombardi’s estate might also be able to pursue damages against negligent parties in a wrongful death action.
