Crane Collapse in Kiryas Joel Crushes Van
- posted: Dec. 31, 2025
Large construction cranes are common sights in New York City and other major urban centers, but this equipment is used anywhere work needs to done high off the ground. Located in Orange County, Kiryas Joel has a population of approximately 30,000, but a frightening crane accident occurred at an intersection where a large residential development is being built.
Acres Enclave is supposed to house more than 3,000 people once it is completed. However, work was halted when a crane collapsed, destroying a van and injuring two people. After tipping over, the length of the extended arm reached from the construction site all the way across the street. Fortunately, the injuries that occurred at the intersection of Acres Road and Bakertown Road were not life-threatening. No one was in the 15-passenger vehicle at the time.
It was not immediately apparent what caused the machine to come crashing down, but there are several common causes of serious crane accidents, such as:
Operation error — Part of the incident investigation likely will examine the qualifications of the individual who was operating the crane at the time. Many heavy equipment accidents are attributable to human error, particularly when the person at the controls lacks proper training or fails to adapt to site-specific conditions.
Cargo overload — Cranes have weight limits that must be observed. Tip-overs, such as the one that occurred in Kiryas Joel, frequently result when the machine is being made to carry a load that is too heavy. Even when cargo falls within the proper weight range, shifts due to wind or other circumstances could put too much stress on the crane.
Mechanical failure — Defective parts, poor maintenance or the failure to notice damage could trigger an accident caused by worn cables, faulty brakes or damaged stabilizers. One of the key pieces of evidence might be inspection records for the equipment that collapsed.
No matter how it happened, obtaining the compensation you deserve following a crane accident can be a complex process. Peter M. Cordovano, P.C. can help preserve evidence, obtain critical records, coordinate with medical providers and pursue insurance claims or litigation against responsible parties. Timely action is essential to protect your rights. My firm handles workers’ compensation, personal injury and wrongful death claims arising out of New York State crane accidents.
