Despite Improvements, SSDI Backlog Remains Near 1 Million Claims

Despite Improvements, SSDI Backlog Remains Near 1 Million Claims

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits can be a financial lifeline for individuals who qualify based on their medical condition and work history. Unfortunately, the system that reviews applications has been overwhelmed for years, leading to a long backlog that can be frustrating to people awaiting a decision on whether they will receive payments.

Federal officials recently touted their progress in reducing the number of waiting claims. However, while the improvement is real, it is also incomplete. Increased hiring in 2023 and 2024 has been cited as one of the reasons there has been a reduction from last year’s peak of roughly 1.2 million initial claims awaiting review. Currently, the Social Security Administration says the backlog stands at about 940,000 pending cases.

A shorter queue does not necessarily mean quick decisions. Even with added staff, initial determinations can still take many months, and downstream backlogs (at reconsideration and hearing) may persist if lower initial approval rates push more claims into appeal. Part of reason for the reduction is that fewer claims are being filed. Though the reason is unclear, applications have declined 7 percent this year.

Nothing can guarantee a prompt resolution of your SSDI claim, but an experienced attorney can guide you through each step of the process, ensuring that your application includes the necessary information and documentation. You’ll need to provide records relating to your medical condition, as well as your employment history over the past 15 years. Evidence of consistent treatment, objective testing where appropriate (imaging, labs, PFTs), and verified description of your functional limitations are critical.

A knowledgeable SSDI lawyer can give you an honest appraisal about your chances for success upon the initial review. If your claim is denied, they can get to work right away preparing your appeal, ensuring that the deadlines are met and that the SSA receives any relevant new evidence, such as changes in your condition. If warranted, your attorney can also assist with a request for expedited processing.
